Chapter 20

The Merchant’s Son

“What’s in Aos Shee?” Sage asked Colin, who was sipping a goblet of a hot, green liquid.

He offered some to Sage, who took the cup and sampled the odd-smelling drink. At once, her whole body felt warm, and she seemed to suddenly recall the taste of a fine chicken dinner, complete with fluffy, buttery potatoes, succulent gravy, and hints of rosemary. She smacked her lips, feeling as though she had sampled a delicious Christmas banquet. Sage looked up at Colin incredulously, and he smirked.

“Poorman’s Brew. It makes you feel like you’ve eaten something you enjoy. It’s the go-to drink of the orphan faerie boy,” Colin mused.

Sage took another sip before handing it back to him. Then, she repeated her question. “And Aos Shee? Why would the old witch tell us to go there?”

Colin set his Poorman’s Brew down beside him and stared deeply into the fire crackling beside them. They were sitting alone in one of Castle Falias’s many libraries, replaying the events of the day. The sun had long set, and the castle was plunged into a sleepy December darkness. Angus had since departed their company, muttering something to himself about the Dullahan and how the world was going mad.

“Shee folk,” Colin said at last, his eyes still fixed upon the fire. “That’s what’s in Aos Shee. Shee folk. Faeries.”

Sage smiled sweetly. “Your people, you mean?”

Colin shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve never been there myself. It’s sort of— well, it’s famously difficult to reach. It’s surrounded by the Killarian Mountains, which is why the Shee folk have made it their seat. It’s well-protected,” Colin explained.

Sage recalled the extensive mountain range that she had seen on the map of Tuatha on her first morning at Castle Falias. “So,” Sage began, “how do we get there?”

Colin smirked, letting a sarcastic scoff escape on his breath as he took another sip from his Poorman’s Brew. “We don’t,” Colin stated, wiping his mouth with his sleeve. “It would be impossible.”

“It can’t be impossible. There must be some way,” Sage argued.

Colin shook his head, staring again into the fire. “If there is a way, I don’t know it,” he said. “It’s December. Any path through the mountains will be completely impassable now. The snow is too deep. And the changing weather is too dangerous,” Colin explained.

Sage bit her lower lip in thought, and she joined Colin in staring off into the fire.

“Besides, we don’t know what could be out there,” Colin added. “Makka. The Dullahan. Mountain dragons, even. It’s too risky.”

“But we have to get there somehow. If the witch wanted us to go there…” Sage reminded him. He slammed his goblet down on the table in frustration, and Sage jolted in her seat at his sudden anger.

“I know!” Colin yelled, turning red in the face. “But I don’t know how we can get there right now. We might have to wait until the spring when the conditions in the Killarians calm down. But even then, it would be a treacherous journey,” he explained, calming himself down.
